ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF KAZAKHSTAN. SEMIPALATINSKY NUCLEAR RANGE.

Annotation. Intensive research activities on the development of nuclear weapons in the framework of the confrontation between the USSR and the United States were expressed in the creation of two test sites: in the city of Semipalatinsk (USSR) and in the state of Nevada (USA). At the test site in Semipalatinsk in 1949, the first tests of a two-kiloton atomic bomb were carried out, and in 1955 the first hydrogen bomb was detonated. The ongoing tests of nuclear weapons had a negative impact on the ecological situation in the region. On August 29, 1991, the President of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarbayev made a decision to close the Semipalatinsk test site. Meanwhile, at present, the test site is officially referred to as the Semipalatinsk nuclear research site. As part of the activities of the test site, work is carried out in the field of agriculture, geological exploration and mining. According to experts, the harmful effects of the landfill on the environment will be felt for several hundred years. Until now, the ecological problems of this territory have not been properly resolved.
