THE IMPACT OF IRAQ'S OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Annotation. Iraq's oil and gas industry has suffered from sanctions and wars in recent decades and its infrastructure is in need of modernization and investment. The environmental situation in the country is unfavourable. For example, the current significant increase in crude oil production leads to an increase in the amount of flared associated gas, which causes dangerous pollution of the environment with combustion gases. The continuous discharge of large quantities of waste water into water bodies due to the lack of surface facilities for its treatment leads to pollution of ground and surface water, as well as soil. The presence of these and other pollutants causes disturbances in the ecosystem and its living and non-living components, as well as contributing to an increase in various diseases and premature mortality. The country lacks programmes for monitoring pollution sources related to the oil and gas industry and has insufficient measuring instruments for controlling compliance with environmental legislation. The necessity to improve the latter and to conduct systematic research in the directions of ecological safety of production is shown.

Keywords: oil, gas, environment, environmental safety, harmful gases, diseases, health protection.
