POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF NANOTECHNOLOGIES
IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Annotation. Improvement of machinery and technology at the present stage of scientific and technological development is the most important factor in the realization of the innovation potential of industry. By the mid 70's it was proved that the mechanical properties of the products obtained from alloys increase with the degree of refinement of their structural components. By now, the "grinding" capabilities of the applied means of modification have reached their limit, and, therefore, the manufacture of products by the methods of "powder technology" from "nano-sized" particles in the machine-building industry has been called "nanotechnology". For this purpose, more effective modifiers in the form of "nanopowders" of refractory high-strength chemical compounds (nitrides, carbides, oxides, borides, etc.), whose application leads to a significant increase in the mechanical properties of the formed products, are used. Most studies on this topic deal with powders made of "nanoparticles", i.e. ("nanopowders"). Particular attention is paid to the development of technologies of application of "nanopowders" of refractory compounds (nitrides, carbonitrides, oxides, borides, etc.), to improve the physical and mechanical properties of structural materials and operational characteristics of engineering products, i.e. the development of "nanotechnology".
